Earlier this month, singer Jhene Aiko released the visual for “Triggered (freestyle)” and those who’re aware of Jhene’s heart-numbingly raw freestyles, know that this freestyle was didn't lack in intensity. I won’t interject upon her personal life because, well... it’s the damn internet and what we see is only a snippet of the real story. For me, watching the video and consuming the lyrics, I felt triggered all over again because I remember. I remember that feeling, that emptiness, that pain, that anger, that confusion, and that sense of hopelessness because the answers are nowhere to be found. Despite that immediate feeling of deep sadness, there's much to appreciate in Jhene's ability to draw out the most intimate emotions in her music.
Stepping onto the cold ridged rocks, which make no promise to hold you up, and finally, you unlock the view. Feeling at peace, you realize it's you and the sound of the waves crashing. Jhene’s “Triggered” begins to play.
Dressed in a windbreaker, Jhene lets her feelings run wild. The Grammy-nominated singer makes music that plays your emotions like a fiddle. You have to wait until you hear her speak. To uncover her state of mind. I think about how music has a way of speaking to you in a way that resonates with the soul. This new track Jhene has created feels like an open love letter, a confessional even. Those recovering from a relationship -or 'situationship' for that matter- can understand the depth behind her lyrics. When Jhene adds pen to paper, her magic comes to life in music form. Jhene’s therapeutical sound can transport you one mood to the next. It can transport you from one mood to the next. Not every artist can move you in that way. Watch “Triggered” below.
